I visited Kushiro in March, 2013 to watch Japanese Cranes. It was late March and most of the roads were without snow except fields where Tancho, or Japanese Cranes were.
I took pictures of manhole covers there as below.
Kushiro is the biggest town in eastern Hokkaido and easy access to Tsurui village where many Japanese Cranes live. So the above manhole covers have three flying cranes. Next picture has small five-crane-flying design and a tower on which the word "火の用心(watch out for fire)" is written.
The picture below has letters that say Kushiro Fire Department.
Another tourist attraction of Kushiro is Kushiro marsh and it is also applied to a manhole cover design.
The last picture in Kushiro is a drain strainer with salmons(maybe).
Akiko lives in a city next to Hakodate and loves to drive around Hakodate and surrounding area. I hope people who visit or live in the Southwest area of Hokkaido come to love the area, too. 函館の隣町在住で道南エリアのドライブ大好きAkikoです。道南を訪れたり、住んでいる人が土地を好きになってくれたらなぁ、と思います。
