About one-hour-and-half drive from Hakodate, you can get to Yakumo town. Yakumo literally means "eight clouds" and the name comes from its weather. It is said that there are eight cloudy days a week, hence the name Yakumo. Anyway, Ginkonyu, a good traditional Japanese style inn is located about ten kilometers inland from Route 5. It is a member of Japan Association of Secluded Hot Spring Inns and attracts deep onsen(hot spring) lovers nationwide.
My husband and I stayed there a night last November(2010) and enjoyed its onsen and delicious food.
When we reserved the inn, a room with toilet cost 14,850 yen per person while a room without toilet cost 10,650yen per person. The fee includes dinner and breakfast. These fee applies for two people with a room. It varies depend on number of people and a room you choose. Please ask the inn.
The inn is located in a deep forest by a river and you can enjoy beautiful natural surroundings. The photo below is one of their outdoor hot spring bath tubs only for the guests who stay a night or more in the inn. The bath tub is installed outside, but you can use it privately.
The room we stayed was Japanese style and I think most of them or all of them are Japanese style.
I forgot to take a photo before futon were ready. As you probably know, futon are Japanese bedding and they are prepared by staff after you finish your dinner.
The scroll of the room says a famous old Chinese poem. If you are interested in the meaning of the poem, please see this page in Japanese and this in English.
The dinner we had was wonderful. You can see the dishes we had;p
We were almost full but there is always room for dessertXD.
But there wasn't room for this bedtime snack. It is a steamed bean-jam bun.
While you are staying at this inn, yukata(casual cotton kimono) and tanzen(thick coat) are good to relax.
A noteworthy thing was that you were not offered slippers. But this two-toe socks were provided. This inn was slippers-free inn!
Another worth mentioning thing was you can enjoy beautiful flower arrangements.
How about visiting this secluded inn and spending a relaxing time?
Akiko lives in a city next to Hakodate and loves to drive around Hakodate and surrounding area. I hope people who visit or live in the Southwest area of Hokkaido come to love the area, too. 函館の隣町在住で道南エリアのドライブ大好きAkikoです。道南を訪れたり、住んでいる人が土地を好きになってくれたらなぁ、と思います。
