I happened to find this cherry tree when I drove from the site of Hekiriji Garrison to Nanae. It is about 12m high and estimated 300 years old. According to an article in the local news paper, Hokkaido shinbun, it didn't have enough blossoms in the past few years. People thought the cause was poor soil, so supporters of the temple gave fertilizer wishing the tree recover its energy to bloom. This year their efforts bear fruit. The cherry tree was really impressive.
Can you see how tall the cherry is? My husband standing by the tree is about 1.8m./大きさわかります？桜の下に立っている夫は１．８メートルほどです。
Houkiji(Sorry, I'm not sure if the name is correct.) Temple and drooping branches/法亀寺（読み方あってるのかしら？）としだれている枝。
Akiko lives in a city next to Hakodate and loves to drive around Hakodate and surrounding area. I hope people who visit or live in the Southwest area of Hokkaido come to love the area, too. 函館の隣町在住で道南エリアのドライブ大好きAkikoです。道南を訪れたり、住んでいる人が土地を好きになってくれたらなぁ、と思います。
