Mt. Hakodate is a generic name for an assembly of several mountains. The highest peak is named Mt. Goten with the height of 334m. At the top of Mt. Goten, modern facilities are located and you can enjoy shopping, eating and overlooking a whole city of Hakodate surrounded by sea. Although the top of the mountain is modernized, this small mountain is rich in nature.
This is about 9km in circumference but about 600 kinds of plants and 150 kinds of birds are found. The mountain was once developed extensively and became a bald mountain. Seven-year forestation was conducted since 1808 and later the mountain was used by the military authorities. While Mt. Hakodate was used by the military, 17 facilities were constructed but the nature was well preserved because the authority prohibited the public from entering the mountain.
Those sites used by the army are still remained and add attractions to the mountain.
Why don't you climb Mt. Hakodate on a fine day?
